My sheer enthusiasm for language started with wanting to know how you spell the letter H, teaching myself to read, and wanting to learn Spanish to talk to the other kids at my daycare. My hobby of learning languages helps in being a linguist and doing my fieldwork, as well as being the exception proving the rule that not all linguists are polyglots.
In my non-academic time, I enjoy keeping active—fencing, lifting weights, teaching and practicing yoga (RYT-200), hiking—and also fueling those activities by cooking and baking. I love a good cup of tea, I like to knit, crochet, and cross-stitch, I play the piano, and I sing. Sometimes I like to tap into my pre-academic life and write short fiction, and more often I'm caught reading sci-fi and fantasy novels. I can recite Friends line for line, have seen all of Criminal Minds more times than I want to admit, and love learning about new musicals to listen to. I raise lots of houseplants, a turtle, and a cat, and I might be the one person in the world who misses dry climates. I am a longtime fan of the Colorado Avalanche—don't worry, I'll keep you posted on how they're doing from October through May. |
