My sheer enthusiasm for language started with wanting to know how you spell the letter H, teaching myself to read, and wanting to learn Spanish to talk to the other kids at my daycare. My hobby of learning languages helps in being a linguist and doing my fieldwork, as well as being the exception proving the rule that not all linguists are polyglots.
In my non-academic time, I enjoy keeping active—fencing, lifting weights, teaching and practicing yoga (RYT-200), hiking—and also fueling those activities by cooking and baking. I love a good cup of tea, I like to knit, crochet, and cross-stitch, I play the piano, and I sing. Sometimes I like to tap into my pre-academic life and write short fiction, and more often I'm caught reading sci-fi and fantasy novels. I can recite Friends line for line and my newest adoration is the musical Hamilton. I raise lots of houseplants, a turtle, and a cat, and I am very fond of all of the spiny flora in Tucson. I am a big fan of the Colorado Avalanche—don't worry, I'll keep you posted on how they're doing from September through May.
